UNIVERSAL CUSTOMIZER 1.0.0.8
This software will customize the U3-CDROM to any ISO file you want.
WARNING: Please backup all data on your flash drive before running this software. It is recommended that you backup the U3 CD-ROM before running this software. To do this follow these directions.
1. Go to My Computer on the Desktop.
2. Right-Click where it says 'U3-CDROM' are something similar to that name.
3. Once the menu comes up click 'Open'.
4. Now simultaneously press 'CTRL' and the 'A' key on the keyboard.
5. Now simultaneously press 'CTRL' and the 'C' key on the keyboard.
6. Now go to your desktop and make a new folder (name it anything like U3BACKUP).
7. Go to your new folder.
8. Now simultaneously press 'CTRL' and the 'V' key on the keyboard.
9. Done.
HOW TO USE UNIVERSAL CUSTOMIZER 1.0.0.8
1. Download the software Universal Customizer 1.0.0.8.
2. Extract to the Desktop and execute Universal_Customizer.
3. Insert a U3 Drive into your PC.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
5. Done.
INFORMATION
Updates: Changed the version variable to '*' so it should now customize all U3 Drives without a problem.
New: Packaged the zip file with a command-line ISO maker.
I scanned the files with Norton AntiVirus 2006.
This computer application is not able to make a classic(normal) flash drive U3 compliant.
The pre-packaged 'U3CUSTOM.ISO' file is the loader for the U3 SwitchBlade/Hacksaw.
You might have to run this software 2 or more times before it works properly (you might get an error message) and manually put your files back on the flash drive and re-install your U3 software titles.
To make your own 'U3CUSTOM.ISO' file follow these directions. (XP/NT/2003 Only)
1. Navigate to the directory where you extracted Universal_Customizer.zip to and open the 'U3CUSTOM' folder.
2. Copy your custom files* to that folder.
3. Go to the parent directory.
4. Execute 'ISOCreate.cmd' (It will create an ISO with the CD name of 'U3CDROM')
5. Launch 'Universal_Customizer' and your done.
*Use the files in the folder where you backed up your U3 CD-ROM if you want to restore your U3 LaunchPad.
U3 FIRMWARE ISO's
Memorex LaunchPad
SanDisk LaunchPad
How to use these ISO files
1. Download an ISO from one of the above links to the directory where you extracted UC 1.0.08 to in the 'BIN' folder.
2. Rename your current 'U3CUSTOM' file to 'U3CUSTOM.OLD' or something(just to keep that file).
3. Rename your newly downloaded ISO file to 'U3CUSTOM'.
4. Go to the parent directory and execute 'Universal_Customizer'.
5. Done.

U3 partner PAYS you to post ? |
As far as I know, TimClark is not affiliated with either U3 or SanDisk. The only recent posters here from U3 are Schrambo (in the developer section) and myself. There are also some posters from SanDisk support here, but TimClark is not one of them.
Most people at U3 love to see what the community is able to do with our platform. Innovative concepts and "hacks" seem a good sign about the platform's adoption rate...
You seem to have a bit of a skewed opinion about U3 as an evil corporate entity, or something. Fact is, U3 is a free platform that comes pre-loaded with many USB flash drives. Great companies like SanDisk, PNY, Memorex, Kingston, Verbatim, and many others have decided to provide the U3 functionality for free on their newest USB flash drive offering. The latest version of the Launchpad gives users much choice: they can switch off the auto-starting of the Launchpad, or even remove it altogether.
Part of the U3 platform is U3 Software Central and the easy way to install applications. We provide this to the software developer community and just because some of the developers write commercial code, doesn't mean we are out to get your money. There are many great free applications on U3 Software Central as well and the number is growing rapidly.

Only applications that are specifically developed for the U3 platform may be loaded onto the smart drive. These applications have been made "U3 smart," and undergo testing and verification through our application certification program."
This is clearly intentionally misleading , designed to make the average
consumer think that you either CANT or , by using the words "MAY",
"verification" and "certification" that it is even "illegal" . and its a LIE .
you can run ANY portable application from the u3 stick . |
Yes, of course U3 smart drives can be used like any regular USB flash drive. So naturally any portable application can be installed. The paragraph on the website clearly talks about installing software on the U3 smart drive so that it runs from the U3 Launchpad. I give you that the answer could contain the word Launchpad one more time to make it really clear to everybody, but I believe it's generally understood what the above sentence means.

hidden cookies capabilities , the unique serial number and
the"licensing control" capabilities . |
If by *you* above you mean TimClark, you may be right. If you mean U3, then you are mistaken here. This is readily available information to anybody and in fact, we talk about the unique serial number whenever we can, as this is a great differentiator and may be a potential solution to many of the endpoint security concerns out there.
I repeat myself by saying your opinion about U3 seems a bit skewed. From reading your post, it looks like you view us as some bad guys out to get you and/or your money. We provide what some consider a really cool platform that can be leveraged by software developers. How they leverage it (i.e. provide free or commercial applications, or hack it) is up to them. If you don't like the payware on U3 Software Central, then that's ok, since you don't need to download any to enjoy your U3 smart drive. |

All SanDisk U3 flash drives are encrypted a the hardware level with 128 bit AES encryption |

I tried the customizer and as soon as it began to format (at 45%) the drive was "ejected" and the app hung and the light on my flash drive remained on solid. I had to kill the process to stop it.
Any ideas on how to get this to work? |

I'm afraid I had a pre-mature posting. (I should see a Dr about that.) After a reboot, I inserted the key and found my "Flash" portion untouched and working but my "CD-ROM" portion was unusable ("corrupt" as per Windows Explorer). I ran the customizer utility again and this time it whizzed right through and completed successfully. I had to reboot again in order to use it but it worked. I think the customizer does something with the Mass Storage Device handler and rebooting is required to bring it back online.
Now I just have to figure out how to use this... |

It works great!!! I have a PNY 2Gb and it was not working with Vista since the u3 launcher version is old... In PNY web page there is no support to upgrade u3 launcher which is really awful!! I used Universal_Customizer to put the iso of SanDisk and now it works great with Vista!!!!
Thanks, thanks, thanks!!!!

If you have old drive you might not care but what about new drive if it does not work.

On my sandisk 512 MB U3 Drive it didnt worked, it runed it with the original iso that came with the customizer, but when i've done it and i pushed it in, it tryed to execute a script that was unsafe according to my Panda antivirus 2006 so i've had to download a program from sandisk's site to restore it. + The launchpad only got to 1.12 Mb or something.
What im trying to say is, that why should you use it, do you really look at it so much you need to customize it??
Its better if you just ask sandisk or whatever company to implent the function in the Launchpad + the ability to make your own.... |

toja,
What you are referring to is the "malware" that comes packed with the "customizer", which has been discussed in this group.
I believe it is a vbs script that comes with it intended to capture data from the host machine.

The "customizer" is not a U3 product, it is not supported by U3, it is not recommended by U3. It can be dangerous.
You are lucky that Panda caught it.
It is not technically a virus I think but there is some overlay between some anti virus programs and anti spyware programs in what they find.
If I am reading your message properly it seems like you were able to restore your drive using the legitimate Sandisk tool.
If so I am happy for you. If not could you clarify.
I agree with you that changing the look of the launchpad is not worth the risks involved.

It's exactly as you say, i used the sandisk tool and was able to restore it, and then it worked exactly as before (except for that the positions for the program's was in the wrong place), so DONT use the customizer. I think i'm going to e-mail sandisk to see if could make them fix that to the next version... |
